Why brake jobs are important

Your car’s brakes keep you safe and are an essential part of your vehicle’s design. If this system isn’t working properly, you put yourself and others at risk whenever you’re on the road.

Over time, brake parts collect rust, dirt, and grime, which can hinder their performance. A regular brake job ensures this system is in the best condition possible so you can depend on your EV’s ability to stop when you need.

When to get a brake job

Many parts of EVs last longer than the counterparts of regular cars, including the brakes.

Because of regenerative braking, your EV’s brake parts take on less strain. So, while gas-powered cars need a brake service roughly every six months, EVs can get by with one service per year or even every two years. Brake parts on gas-powered vehicles will wear down and need replacing after three to six years, but on an EV, this timeline is extended to five to seven years.

It’s also important to have your brakes cleaned, no matter what type of vehicle you drive. Check out this article for more information on cleaning EV brakes.

Aside from these intervals, have your brakes assessed by a professional immediately if you notice any of these symptoms:

  • Grinding sound when braking
  • Brake pedal feels stiff or too soft
  • Loose/off-centre steering wheel
  • Vehicle pulling to one side
  • Increased stopping time

Delaying a brake inspection can lead to serious consequences. If you’re ever concerned about the condition of your EV’s brakes, get them inspected right away.

Brake job breakdown

To perform a complete brake job on your vehicle, an auto technician will place your car on a hoist, remove the wheels, and inspect and clean every component of your braking system.

A NexDrive auto technician may recommend replacing certain components. You can always ask to see the worn components, too. If you do inspect them, look for rough surfaces, rust, dimpling, and wear.

Once your brake job is done, there should be a noticeable improvement in your vehicle’s braking performance.

As EV experts, our technicians are highly experienced in completing brake jobs and know exactly what to look for to make sure everything is working as it should.
